Friends Under the Mango Tree🌳
By the side of a wide, blue river, under the shade of a giant mango tree, lived Zuzu the Ant and Piya the Pigeon. Even though they had very different wings and legs, they shared one big friendship.
Zuzu was a very hard worker. One sunny morning, as he was heavily dragging a tiny grain of rice, Piya giggled from her branch and said, “Oh, Zuzu! Working hard again? Why don’t you ever take a break? You are missing all the fun up here!”
Zuzu smiled and replied, “Fun is nice, Piya. But I must prepare. The rainy season will come soon, and food will be very hard to find.” Piya just laughed and flew off to chase colorful butterflies, while Zuzu continued his steady work.
The Cold Rainy Days🌊
A few weeks later, the skies turned dark and grey. Heavy rain poured for days without stopping. The berries vanished, the seeds became wet, and there was absolutely no food to be found anywhere in the forest.
One gloomy morning, Zuzu peeked outside his dry tunnel and saw Piya sitting on a low branch, shivering with tears in her eyes. “Piya? Why are you crying, my friend?” Zuzu asked with worry.
“I haven’t eaten anything for the last two days,” Piya sighed heavily. “All the seeds are wet, and I didn’t store any food…”
Zuzu smiled warmly and said, “Well… luckily for you, I stored enough for both of us!” Zuzu quickly ran back into his tiny home and returned with a pile of dry grains carefully wrapped in a leaf. Piya’s eyes filled with tears of gratitude. “You are sharing this with me, even after I teased you? I am so sorry, Zuzu,” she whispered. From that rainy day on, their bond became unbreakable.
A Slippery Mistake🍂
On a hot summer day, after a long afternoon of gathering crumbs, Zuzu felt very thirsty. He looked up at the tree and said, “Piya, I’ll be back in a jiffy! I’m just going down to sip some cool river water.”
“Be very careful, Zuzu! Those rocks near the water can be sneaky and slippery,” Piya warned. “Don’t worry, I’ve danced on them a thousand times!” Zuzu cheered.
But as he leaned down to drink, Zuzu suddenly slipped and fell right into the rushing current! “WAAAH! Piya! HELP!” Zuzu screamed, splashing wildly. “I can’t swim! The river is too strong!”
Piya didn’t hesitate for a single second. She quickly plucked a broad leaf from the tree and dropped it right next to her drowning friend. “Hold on, Zuzu! Climb onto the leaf!” she called out.
With all his strength, Zuzu climbed onto the floating leaf and safely floated to the shore. Shivering and breathless, he looked at his friend. “You saved my life, Piya.”
Promises Under the Moon❤️
That evening, a beautiful moon shone over the river. The forest was peaceful, but Zuzu was still thinking about what had happened.
“Piya… I really thought I was going to sink today,” Zuzu said softly. “You risked your wings and flew straight into danger for me.”
Piya tilted her head and smiled gently. “You are my best friend, Zuzu. What else would I do? I couldn’t just watch you drown.”
“But I am so tiny. Most creatures wouldn’t even notice me. But you did,” Zuzu said seriously. “I promise you, Piya—if danger ever comes looking for you, I will be there to protect you.”
Piya giggled playfully, “Oh really? Even if it’s a giant jungle cat or a fire-breathing dragon?” “Even then!” Zuzu grinned, puffing out his tiny chest. “I’ll climb right up its tail and bite it right on the nose! Don’t underestimate us ants, we can lift fifty times our weight!”
The Danger in the Bushes😮
A few days later, Zuzu was strolling through the riverside bushes, humming a happy tune. Suddenly, he froze. Something was moving very quietly in the shadows.
Zuzu crept closer and gasped. It was a hunter! He was holding a slingshot, aiming it directly at a low branch on the mango tree where Piya was peacefully sitting, completely unaware of the danger.
“Hold still, little bird. You’re mine,” the hunter muttered. “Oh no! Not my dear friend Piya!” Zuzu’s heart raced. “I won’t let him do this!”
The Sting of Bravery✨
Remembering his promise under the moon, Zuzu forgot all his fear. He sprinted as fast as his tiny legs could carry him, rushed up the hunter’s heavy boot, and bit him on the ankle with every ounce of strength he had!
“YOWCH! What was that?!” the hunter yelled out in pain, dropping his hand in surprise.
The slingshot snapped, firing completely off-target. The stone whizzed past Piya harmlessly. Startled by the loud shout, Piya flapped her wings in a panic and darted safely up into the high sky.
The hunter stomped around in anger, trying to find the pest that bit him, but Zuzu had already hidden safely under a leaf. Defeated and frustrated, the hunter grabbed his things and marched away from the forest.
No Friend is Too Small🐜
Piya flew back down to the grass, her heart still beating fast. “Who saved me? What just happened?”
“It was me! Zuzu!” a tiny voice called out. Zuzu crawled out from the grass, breathless. “The hunter was aiming at you, Piya. I had to bite him to protect you!”
Piya landed softly right beside him, her eyes soft with emotion. “Zuzu… you risked everything for me. You are so tiny, yet you faced a giant hunter.”
“You saved me from the river, Piya,” Zuzu smiled, wiping a bit of dirt off his face. “How could I ever let you face danger alone?” Piya gently nuzzled Zuzu with her feathers. “I don’t care how small you are. You have the biggest heart in the whole forest.”
News of the brave rescue spread across the woods. The squirrels chattered about it, the turtles smiled, and the monkeys cheered for the power of friendship. From that day on, the ant and the pigeon lived happily by the riverside, proving to everyone that no creature is too small to be a hero, and no friendship is too different to be true.
